In 1897, Sidraphong, a sedate, sleepy hamlet in the Darjeeling district of the then undivided Bengal came in to limelight for an unprecedented achievement. The reason that led to the eminence of Sidraphong in the ‘Power Map’ of the British India and subsequently the entire Empire was the successful commissioning of the first Public Utility Power Generation Hydro Station. It needs no reiteration that since then, development of power sector in this part of India has steadily reached a remarkable height.

With the urbanization boom, growth of Industry and the advent of Green Revolution, electricity has become an essential commodity in our life. To harness the process of holistic development of the state, the state owned electricity utilities have not only proved their worth, but today are playing a commendable role in this sector.

To facilitate and meet the fast emerging needs of the state’s ever-growing industrial and domestic requirement, The West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited, or WBPDCL, a fully state owned company, was incorporated in1985.

The primary objective of the Company has always been to promote the business of electric power generation and evacuation for subsequent supply in the state. In fact, presently the total installed capacity of the state is 7501 MW, of which, with a capacity of 4170 MW, this premier state owned Power Utility generates bulk of the State’s power supply.

With an objective to improve station heat rate and after building of all generating stations under one umbrella as advised by the State Government, the then WBSEB had handed over the management of Bandel and Santaldih Thermal Power Stations to WBPDCL in the year 2001, since WBPDCL was then performing well in maintaining Kolaghat TPS, Bakreswar TPP and Sagardighi TPP.

Green Field Initiative ….. Katwa Thermal Power Project

WBPDCL has already initiated its plan to develop one more gree-field Thermal Power Project with two units at Katwa in Bardhaman district of the state. Accessible through the Bardhaman – Katwa State Highway, S – 7, the site is situated 6 km from Katwa Town; Katwa Thermal Power Project will be just 50 km from Bardhaman Town. The Station can be accessed via Azimgunj Katwa line. Linked with Burdwan which is to be converted from narrow guage to broad guage and hence the project is under construction.

Sagardighi TPS, Phase -II

SgTPP Phase-II, comprising of two(2) extension Units of 500 MW capacity each is being implemented by the Company in the Murshidabad district, WestBengal, India. This Power Station will generate electeicity and feed into the West Bengal Transmission Grid to meet the ever rising power demand in West Bengal.
